Professional Auditing Practices

Environmental Laws & Regulations
Both environmental compliance auditors and auditors performing environmental management system (EMS) audits need to understand the compliance obligations (“legal and other requirements”) applicable to the organizations they are auditing. For compliance auditors, this includes being able to determine which laws and regulations apply to a particular process, facility or operation. For EMS auditors, basis awareness of environmental compliance requirements is needed.

Auditors also need to understand the types of internal control systems and procedures typically used to ensure compliance with regulatory criteria. This includes being able to evaluate the organizational processes established for –
- identification of applicable compliance requirements,
- assigning responsibility for compliance tasks and functions,
- ensuring individual competence,
- implementing appropriate operational controls,
- conducting necessary monitoring and measurement, and
- assessing compliance status.
Ethics & Standards of Conduct
Auditors need to have an understanding of audit standards of conduct and the types of ethical issues that may arise in the course of conducting an environmental compliance audit.
