Environmental Compliance Awareness Course

This Environmental Compliance Awareness Course provides auditors with a general awareness of the major environmental regulatory programs that are most likely to be encountered by auditors when they perform environmental compliance or environmental management system audits in the United States.

Course Content

This course starts by providing an overview of the compliance related requirements set out in the 2004 AND the 2015 versions of the ISO 14001 standard.  It then provides an overview of the major U.S. environmental regulatory programs.  Then, a step-by-step approach for identifying applicable compliance obligations is set out and legal issues related to conducting compliance audits are reviewed.

In addition to eight recorded lessons, the course includes a quiz and a case study exercise for students to test their knowledge of the potential applicability of legal, regulatory and other requirements to case studies reflecting commonly-encountered environmental audit situations.

In addition to the course materials, there are also members-only resources pages that contains links to a wide range of reference materials useful in understanding U.S. environmental regulatory requirements.

Course Structure

This is an on-demand web-based course set up in a members-only virtual classroom.

The course uses audio lessons, downloadable handouts and on-line quizzes.  In order to complete the course, you will need to access the course from a computer that allows you to view the course materials, download the course documents and view Flash-based presentations.  The course materials are only provided on-line.

Thea Dunmire, JD, CIH, CSP is the course instructor.  She is an environmental attorney, certified industrial hygienist and certified safety professional with over 30 years of auditing experience.
